you’ve all set yourself quite a task, the discovery of a country. I envision you metaphorically crawling around a huge landscape with small viewfinders. But of course, anywhere you go, there you are. Almost as interesting as what you’re seeing are the different ways in which you acknowledge the relationship between yourselves as observers and the subject of your observations. Lee, like an impressionist painting, describing the bits and pieces of the sensory experience. Peter’s stories recognize that his experience of the country comes through interactions, while John’s comment even more openly concentrates on his own reactions.
What is culture but the relationship between a people and a place? Mark’s geological perspective attempts to focus on the bones of the culture, while subtly acknowledging that even the landscape is (differently) interpreted. Tell us more about the physical places in which you find yourselves. The power of the Ganges’ current is an important and relevant piece of information.
